The year 2017 was always going to be big year at the movies, with the yearly marvel release as well as other hotly anticipated movies and so far it has delivered. It could be rightly said that the month of June was an auspicious month for movie goers the world over. Most people (including myself) were skeptical about DC’s latest release: Wonder Woman and rightly so given the history of lackluster and disappointing movies with poor story lines that have so far failed to do justice to their awesome roster of characters (looking at you Batman vs Superman). Wonder Woman was a pleasant surprise, gaining both critical and commercial success and breathing some much needed life into the ailing DCEU. Other Franchises such as Universal’s newly announced Dark Universe and Transformers failed to hit the mark with entries like The Mummy and Transformers: The Last Knight respectively with The Mummy especially failing to get Universal’s Dark Universe off to a flyer. Other lesser known releases such as It Comes at Night and The Big Sick found critical success and compensated for the disappointment from the major studios.
The Month of July so far has been even better and has already provided us with its own batch of awesome blockbuster entries such as Spider-Man: Homecoming which has been met with critical and commercial success and (in my opinion) stars Tom Holland as the best Spidey ever and is the 2nd best Spider-Man movie (after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2). This month as also given us the wonderfully and weirdly beautiful A Ghost’s Story directed by David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon) and stars Oscar winner Casey Affleck alongside Rooney Mara in a story about love and loss as well as the infinity of time. A Ghost Story has been met with overwhelming praise for its story and could well be this year’s best film. Another entry this month was Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes which is the conclusion to the Planet of the Apes franchise still starring Andy Serkis’ motion capture performance as the beloved Ceaser, the movie is already being hailed a masterpiece as it concludes one of the greatest (and perhaps overlooked) trilogies ever and does it in stunning fashion.
Even with the above mentioned releases this month, July has no intentions on slowing down and here are 4 awesome movies to still look forward to this month:
Written by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and Director Malcom D. Lee, (Barbershop: The Next Cut, The Best Man Holiday) and starring big names like Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall and Tiffany Haddish, Girls Trip looks really promising as it follows the group of women on vacation in store for and R rated comedic adventure. Judging by his previous works, director, Malcom D. Lee has shown the knack for balancing ensemble casts with equal measures of comedy and heart so expect Girls Trip to be raunchy and entertaining.

Based on the French sci-fi comic series, ValĂ©rian and Laureline. The film stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as a pair of operatives sent to a sprawling metropolis to investigate a looming threat. Director Luc Besson (The Professional, The Fifth Element) is a distinctive filmmaker with a taste for stunning visuals but he’s had his ups and downs and it remains to be seen if Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a hit or miss, here's to hoping the former is the case.

DUNKIRK (JULY 21)
There isn’t any doubt that Christopher Nolan is a visionary director capable of telling visually gripping, well-constructed and carefully crafted stories that have layers and depth capable of engaging the viewer and render them breathless. Dunkirk is Nolan’s first foray into the War genre so it would be fun to see what he does with this one which is the story of the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the titular beach in 1940 during World War II.
Dunkirk boasts an ensemble cast that includes the enormously talented Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, James D’Arcy and Mark Rylance. It’s definitely not one to miss.
